Today we are introducing you to David, small business owner of the Yamba Barber shop in NSW.
Years ago, David visited a friend on Coney Island in America who owned an immaculate barbershop. When he came home to Australia, David reflected on how much he would have liked to be a barber and open his own business. His American friend challenged and asked him, “why don’t you do it?”.
Today, David is running a successful barber shop in Yamba NSW, and reminds us to always ‘remember your dreaming’.

Remembering his dreaming
“I went over to America to meet a friend who lives on Coney Island and went to his barber shop. You would not have thought anything of it from the outside of it but inside it was an immaculate barbershop.”
One of David’s Indigenous elders, Ken Walker, reminds us to ‘remember your dreaming’.
“Dreaming can be dreams that seem so high that they can’t be reached. Any dream can be reached, if there is anything that you want to do, just believe in yourself because you can do it.”
Working with Many Rivers to open Yamba Barber Shop
David was introduced to Ofelia from Many Rivers by the Aboriginal Business Development team.
“Ofelia got my head around what a small business is. The first thing that she said to me was that I am proving a service to the local community. The second thing that she helped me to realise is that I was also generating my own wages in providing a services. The third things she mentored me on was consistency and quality.”
“Ultimately, the feeling that I got from Ofelia was that she was genuinely concerned about my success.”
