Meet Jillian, the small business owner of Jill’s Services, a cleaning business in Paraburdoo WA
After moving to Paraburdoo in Western Australia 18 months ago, Jillian has built up a large portfolio of clients for her cleaning business thanks to her high cleaning standards. As the number one cleaner in her community, Jillian hopes to inspire other Indigenous people to build something similar for themselves.

Meet Jillian
I’m a sole trader with a cleaning business and I’ve been operating in Paraburdoo, Western Australia for about 18 months now. Before owning my own cleaning business, I worked for a business in Leonora as the Head of Cleaning. I found out about Many Rivers when I was living in Leonora WA a few years ago. Then I moved to Paraburdoo and had the privilege of working with my business coach here to set up my cleaning business. When I was in Leonora, I stopped working because of my health. I had an operation and was sitting at home and wasn’t doing anything. I thought to myself, ‘I need to change my life around’, so I decided to set up my own business.
Working with Many Rivers
Many Rivers helped me a lot with developing my business plan, and how to go about everything – I thank you guys for that. Talking to my Business Coach and telling him what I achieved was
great because it boosted my self-esteem and confidence. You’ve got to have a positive outlook on the things you want to achieve, and you can benefit from other people’s opinions.

My Business Coach helped me to design my business cards and a magnet for my car. Little things like that go a long way, it makes you feel like you are worthy. I didn’t get a loan. I’ve done everything myself because I think to myself, ‘If I can afford to get item, I will save for it’. I’ve got a couple of casual employees at the moment. I’m giving them the chance to show me what kind of work ethic they have. That’s the most important thing to me, is someone’s work ethic.
Biggest Challenge
The biggest challenge for me was when I started my business in Paraburdoo. I thought it would be rosey and I’d get jobs immediately. It didn’t happen – I got a few jobs here and there. That was the biggest challenge – coming to Paraburdoo with an existing cleaner in the market and getting clients.
Biggest Success
My biggest success was showcasing my high-quality work to the community, and then the doors opened and people were running around looking for me for their cleaning jobs. My cleaning standards were higher than the competition, and so my business grew. I feel so proud and privileged to be able to work in this community and work with all the businesses around the town. My standards are pretty high and everybody calls me for everything!
Biggest Change
The biggest change for me has been the sense of pride I now have. I’m now highly recommended around the community because I have a strong work ethic and a great personality.
Future Goals
I want to help Indigenous people look at the big picture and be inspired. I want to bring Indigenous people on the journey to success with me, to show them my experiences and the things I have achieved so they can do something similar themselves.
