Meet Tanya-Jade Slater
Meet Tanya-Jade Slater, the owner of Tanya’s Fresh N Clean Housekeeping Services based in Nimbin, NSW. Over the past four and a half years, Tanya has built a successful cleaning business specialising in deep cleans and end of lease cleans. What started with very little equipment and no car has grown into a steady business servicing the Nimbin and surrounding areas.
Before starting her business, Tanya was cleaning public toilets for a local cafe for only an hour a day. Wanting to create more opportunities for herself, she decided to advertise her cleaning services locally. After registering her business name, Tanya began receiving calls from clients and slowly built her business from the ground up.
In the beginning, Tanya walked up to two kilometres to jobs pulling her cleaning supplies in a small wagon because she did not have a car. Through hard work and support from Many Rivers, she has been able to grow her business into a sustainable source of income.
“The biggest thing for me was knowing there was always someone there to answer my questions. Christopher always seemed to know the answers and gave me a lot of confidence to keep moving forward with my business. Having that support made me feel more capable and reassured that I was doing things properly.” – Tanya-Jade Slater

About the business
I own Tanya’s Fresh and Clean Housekeeping Services, a cleaning business based in Nimbin, NSW. I specialise in deep cleans and end of lease cleans and have been running the business for four and a half years. I started the business because there were not many job opportunities available locally, and I wanted to create more work and income for myself. Once I registered the business name and advertised my services, people started calling for jobs and the business gradually grew from there.
These days, I work across the Nimbin and surrounding areas, balancing regular house cleans with larger end of lease cleaning jobs. It is physically demanding work, but I enjoy being my own boss and creating a business that works well for me.
Working with Many Rivers
I found Many Rivers through Facebook after reading about the support they offered. At the time, I was trying to build my business and work everything out on my own, so I thought it could be really helpful for me.
Many Rivers supported me mostly with accounting and record keeping. They helped me understand how everything worked, what I needed to record and how to stay organised with the financial side of running a business.
The biggest thing for me was knowing there was always someone there to answer my questions. Christopher always seemed to know the answers and gave me a lot of confidence to keep moving forward with my business. Having that support made me feel more capable and reassured that I was doing things properly.
Biggest Challenge
The biggest challenge for me has been keeping up with the accounting and paperwork after work each day. Cleaning is a very physical job, so by the end of the day, the last thing I want to do is sit in front of a computer and work on finances and records.
Running a business means doing everything yourself. You have to manage the cleaning, organise clients, stay positive and professional, and then still come home and complete all the administration work afterwards. It definitely feels overwhelming at times.
Biggest Success
One of my biggest successes was being able to save enough money to buy a car. When I first started the business, I did not have a car at all, so I packed all my cleaning supplies into a small wagon and walked to jobs. Buying a car completely changed things for me. It opened up more areas that I could work in and made it possible to take on more jobs. It also saved me so much time and energy because I no longer had to walk long distances carrying equipment before starting work.
Biggest Change
The biggest positive change since starting my business is that I can now afford rent – I was able to move into a little cabin of my own. Starting the business has given me more independence, stability and confidence in myself. I have been able to create a balanced workload that works for me while building a steady income doing something I genuinely enjoy.
