Meet Tegan: Starting Biyani Physiotherapy
After years of working across a range of industries and healthcare settings, Tegan Lloyd felt ready to take on a new challenge-starting her own physiotherapy practice. Today, she is the owner of Biyani Physiotherapy, a sole practitioner physiotherapy clinic based in Greenwell Point on the South Coast of New South Wales.
As a Level 2 Women’s Health Physiotherapist with interests in elder care, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and rehabilitation, Tegan is passionate about providing high-quality care to her local community. With a strong desire to create a service that reflects her values and meets the needs of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous clients, she took the leap into business ownership and opened the doors to Biyani Physiotherapy.
Working with Many Rivers
I found out about Many Rivers through Indigenous Business Australia and was connected with my business coach, Shelley.
Shelley has been amazing. She has provided me with the tools I need to be successful and continues to offer great support for the day-to-day aspects of running a business. She has also encouraged me along the way and given me the confidence to pursue what I hope to achieve with my practice.
Biggest Challenge
My biggest challenge so far has been getting my appointment book filled, although it is still only the second week of business. The real marketing has not started yet, so I know building awareness and attracting clients will take time.
Another adjustment has been not having my regular, substantial wage contributing to our household and living expenses. Starting a business comes with financial changes, and that has been one of the biggest shifts for my family and me.
Biggest Success
My biggest success to date has been opening the clinic.
After working in a variety of sectors throughout my career-including retail, investment banking, medical practice, public and private health, and an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation-I reached a point where I felt ready to own my own business. Opening Biyani Physiotherapy has been a significant milestone and something I am very proud of.
Biggest Change
One of the biggest changes for me has been the opportunity to work in my own village community.
I love being able to walk to work from my home and provide physiotherapy services locally. Having control over the level of service I provide, the software I use, and where I work has allowed me to create a practice that reflects my values and the needs of the community.
Future Goals
I hope to build a successful physiotherapy clinic that is fully booked-but not too far in advance-and known throughout the community as a welcoming, professional, compassionate, and effective practice.
My goal is for Biyani Physiotherapy to provide high-quality care that makes a positive difference in the lives of clients and supports the health and wellbeing of our local community.
