Leader Biography

Taha Cowen is a Tasmanian Aboriginal woman serving as Vice-Chair of the Weetapoona Aboriginal Corporation based on Bruny Island, Tasmania.
Taha brings a strong lived cultural grounding shaped by her family’s deep connections to Country, alongside a professional background in government policy and climate and marine science. As Vice Chair, Taha brings a focus on strengthening governance systems, embedding robust project management, and developing enterprise wide approaches that help deliver the priorities set as an organisation. This includes advancing opportunities for economic development, improving land and sea Country management practices, and supporting initiatives that reinforce cultural identity and the wellbeing of current and future generations.

Community Economic Work

Weetapoona Aboriginal Corporation is strengthening opportunities for community through strategic economic development. Current priorities include leveraging the Corporation’s strong asset base to expand accommodation services and explore development of authentic cultural experiences that showcase heritage for community benefit. Under its Longwinny entity, the Corporation manages a Merino sheep farm, creating local employment and supporting sustainable enterprise. A further focus is Land and Sea Country management, guided by cultural values and supported by on Country Rangers to ensure long term environmental, cultural, and economic sustainability for future generations.
Areas of interest are, economic opportunities across sustainable land and sea Country management, cultural tourism, sustainable agriculture, clean energy and conservation.
