Kimberley She’ro is a new podcast series that is amplifying the voices of Indigenous women and promoting their culture through story telling.
Natasha Short shares the experiences and wisdom of some the most inspirational Indigenous women in the Kimberley. Natasha runs Kimberley Jiyigas, a small business and movement of Indigenous women who are united in their passion to lead and influence social change within their communities, region and nation. They combine their talents, skills and networks to offer services and products that tackle social problems and provide people access to employment and training.
The podcast is a platform for listeners to learn about the culture and history of the Kimberley. It gives Indigenous women the power to tell their own story without editing from media sources. Natasha explains that, “its better coming from our own mouths and perspectives without being edited. It’s not sugar coated, its plain and direct.”
“Aboriginal women’s voices are the minority within a minority and the least likely to be heard in mainstream media. Basically, podcasts and technology have given us this awesome platform to reach the whole world. I saw we had a listener in South America on our first podcast.”
“I’ve had this experience where I’m travelling internationally and when people ask where I’m from I say I’m Australia and I’m also Indigenous, they say ‘what’s that’. Here I am now 20 years later with this medium to use our own voices to tell our own story to reach anyone in the world.”
First Podcast Episode: Judith Butters
In the first episode, Natasha talks with Judith Butters who was born in a Stolen Generation Settlement in the 1950s. As the second eldest of ten children, Judy took on some mothering responsibilities as a young girl.
“A lot of our young people assume responsibilities that should be parents’ or adults’. They seem to sense that they need to step up and contribute to family needs. They do it without resentment and see that they’re actually benefiting their siblings on many occasions.”
Natasha and Judith discuss everything from the education in the Kimberleys, the Christian faith within their Indigenous spirituality, Indigenous skin types and how their culture has evolved in a Western society.
Many Rivers business coach Maree, has been working with Natasha and Judith since 2018 and supporting their business ambitions.
