Brittney has achieved goal after goal since taking the leap to start her own small business. The beauty industry was not where she thought she would end up, but after finding a passion to help women feel good about themselves – Brittney hasn’t looked back.
Her small beauty business, The Land of Looks, is growing rapidly.

Meet Brittney
I opened in 2018 and I have a beauty salon. I started in a smaller shop and I just opened in a bigger shop.
It started as a hobby for about 6 months before I opened my business. Before that, I was a sales rep for 5 years for a wholesale food company.
I think my personality and my background in sales really helped me get clients, build my business, and get them to come back. My sales rep job was to get people to buy for us and so it was about building relationships. I always keep my word and I am always honest. This made a lot of customers of my salon feel really comfortable with me.
The Business Idea
I always wanted to run my own business, but I never knew what I wanted to do. Then I had a daughter a few years ago. I was never really interested in beauty but when I got pregnant, I started getting spray tanned and I really loved how it made me feel good about myself and my body. I loved how such a minor thing could make clients so appreciative and have so much more confidence. It is almost like offering a therapy session but in the sense of giving people confidence in themselves!
The beauty sector stood out to me because I was able to help women feel good about themselves. It is such a rewarding career and hard work if you have the passion for it. I have not stopped since I have opened. I have gained skill set after skill set – tanning, lashes, brows, cosmetic tattooing, IPL.
Working With Many Rivers
When I started the business I had no money and no business partners to rely on. I wanted to get bigger and to do this I needed equipment and machinery. I couldn’t do this without a loan. So Many Rivers has helped me by providing finance and Stacy gave me support as well and tells me she has my back. I was new to business and I knew nothing so I really needed that guidance.
After I repaid this loan, I got another to open my bigger store. Many Rivers saw how much I have achieved in such a small amount of time and were happy to support me in that way. I am thinking I want to get another to open a second location soon too.
The fact that there is something like Many Rivers is even around is incredible. It is just so great that they can do that and I have never seen anything like it. I have that support as well to be successful and to pay back my loans. Many Rivers wants you to be successful because they are taking a risk on you if they agree to support you with a loan. Not like banks that don’t care. The whole point is giving people opportunity.
Employing Staff and Growing Her Small Beauty Business
At one point I had 6 staff members before COVID19. But with COVID-19 and also with restructuring my store and what we offer, I only have 2 now. I found that this is the most efficient number of staff for my business at the moment. Instead of having staff on call just in case I have a booking, I learnt that I am better off when I only take bookings if I have the time. I am making more money than when I had 6 staff. I also only offer services that I can do because if it is something that a staff member specialises in and they leave, I am in a sticky situation.
I also have services available now that pay as well in a single session than the income from a whole day offering another service. I am a bit more business smart in that sense.
Biggest Challenge
Probably learning not to over stretch myself and also how to balance work and home life.
The work does not stop, when I am at home, I am at work – when I am at work, I am at work. I have started to plan time to balance everything out and put time aside to have a social life and to take my daughter out because these are also responsibilities as well as making sure that my bills are paid.
Biggest Success
How quickly I have done it all without anyone pointing me in this direction. I am so qualified now and my small beauty business has doubled in size. I am proud with how I have fully adapted to my industry. There are always more things that I am finding out about. It is finding something that I love, that I can do and that I am passionate about. I have found ways now to have balance while always still looking at all the new opportunities coming up. My mind is thinking of new things all the time and what I can do next. I think you have to have passion in business.
Future Goals For The Land of Looks
I am trying to set up my own wholesaling business and sell things that I buy from other people. I also want to get more into my beauty education and train people up. I am doing this with lashes already. I am also considering doing counselling services – so all kinds of different things!
Eventually I want to expand my small beauty business and open a store in a second location.
