Hayden Brown’s Business
We are road sweeping and cleaning contractors, and our business has been running for two years. We have sweeper trucks to clean up waste from businesses and factories, mostly in construction areas or commercial areas such as car parks of shopping malls or industrial wastage etc. We offer our cleaning services all over Adelaide.
I used to work in finance, but I always dreamed of having my own business. I left my finance job and started working in a sweeper truck, and from there, I never looked back. Eventually, this job led me towards starting my own cleaning business.
Working with Many Rivers
I found out about Many Rivers from someone at the “The Circle – The First Nations Indigenous Hub” and then I reached out. I have been in touch with Leigh, my business coach from Many Rivers since the last six months.
When we got in touch with Many Rivers, we needed a business coach to guide us with respect to opening a new arm of our business. I have been in touch with Leigh, my business coach from Many Rivers since the last six months and I got help with everything, starting from making our business plan to managing cash flow, dealing with existing business matters, and figuring out how everything fits with our new service. I would say Leigh’s experience and his passion for making our business successful has been the most useful assistance for us. He puts things into perspective and helps us accomplish our goals. We wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for Leigh’s constant support and guidance.
Did you get a loan from MR? How did you use the loan?
No, we didn’t need a loan because our cash flow is stable right now. We just needed help organizing our business ideas, making plans, and putting those plans into action. Leigh stepped in and helped us with the actual work and gave us guidance to move in the right direction. He’s more like an advisor or mentor to us.
Do you have any current employees? If so, how many employees? Are they full-time or part-time?
We have a few casual employees handling administrative tasks and four sweeper truck drivers. Since our business operates at irregular hours, we need extra drivers as backup.
Biggest Challenge
There have been many little hurdles, but none big enough to make me give up on my business. When I first started, I hurt my back, which made it tough to run the business while dealing with the pain. Plus, we faced problems with some equipment we bought second-hand—it kept breaking down. But despite all these obstacles, we pushed through. We’ve had great clients, and overall, it’s been quite an adventure—a rewarding one.
Biggest Success
Honestly, there have been many successes. I particularly enjoy negotiating with my clients and receiving positive feedback from them. It’s just enjoyable to be in charge and lead the way for my business. Its like an adventure for me with different challenges and successes.
Biggest Change
Now, I can attend many of my kids’ events because my business schedule is flexible. In my old job, I barely saw my kids once or twice a week because I left home before they woke up and got back when they were already asleep. But with this business, I can spend more time with my family and maintain a better balance between work and life.
Future Goals
In the short run, I aim to expand the business steadily and team up with the right clients. My goal is to build a sustainable business, not just for myself but also for my employees and clients. I want our company culture to focus on creating a positive work environment where everyone enjoys coming to work, and where our clients are consistently satisfied with our service, rather than just chasing profits
