Meet Jessie Mordey, the small business owner of Zomered Style, an Indigenous art business based in Hervey Bay, QLD.
Jessie was born and raised in Tamwoy Town on Waiben (Thursday Island) and is a proud Torres Strait Islander woman. She is a descendant of the Dauareb and Komet Clan, as well as the Kemer Kemer Meriam Nation and Maluilgal Wakaid Clan from Badhu (Badu) Island. Jessie’s deep connection to her cultural traditions, ancestral stories, and the land and sea of the Torres Strait Islands inspires everything she creates. Her art is a vibrant celebration of her heritage, blending ancestral stories and symbols into contemporary designs that express both culture and identity.
Through her business, Zomered Style, Jessie shares her artwork in many forms, from canvases and framed prints to everyday merchandise like mugs, coasters, and magnets. The name “Zomered” carries deep personal and cultural meaning—it was given to her by her late grandfather, the respected head of the Passi Clan, and it connects her to her roots, family, and identity. Jessie began her journey at local markets and exhibitions and has since gained recognition at major events like the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair. With each piece, Jessie’s goal is to connect people with Indigenous culture in a meaningful way while growing her dream of one day showcasing her art in galleries like Brisbane’s GOMA.

Jessie’s Business
I started my business in 2023 in Brisbane with the help of my cousin. My goal was to sell my artwork on canvases and prints, and I dreamed of having my art in galleries. I also sell merchandise like mugs, cups, coasters, fridge magnets, and framed prints. I just want people to see and enjoy the type of art I do.
I first began selling at the Maeeanjin Markets, and people showed interest in my work. Later, I did an exhibition in Brisbane with my daughter, which gave me more exposure. I am still learning what people want and testing the demand for my art.
Working with Many Rivers
How did you find out about Many Rivers?
I reached out to Many Rivers myself last year, and that’s how I connected with Kristy.
Why did you want to go into business?
I wanted to share my art with people and see how far I can take it. I also wanted more freedom to focus on my creativity.
What services did you receive from Many Rivers? How did it help?
My business coach, Kristy has helped me look at the bigger picture for my business. She has guided me with cashflow and planning step by step. We are working on my business plan and website together. She gives me advice on how my business is going now and how I can improve it.
What did you find the most useful about the assistance from Many Rivers?
The best part is having someone to talk to about my business ideas. Kristy explains things clearly and helps me understand. She supports me with the business side, so I can focus more on the creative side.
Did you get a loan from MR? How did you use the loan?
No
Do you have any current employees? If so, how many employees? Are they full-time or part-time?
Just me
Biggest Challenge
My biggest challenge is finding time to focus on the business side. I love creating art, but I also need to manage the business side properly.
Biggest Success
My biggest success is when my art gets recognised and people enjoy it. I have sold well at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair. I first went in 2023 and again this year in 2025. Most of my sales come from there, both canvases and merchandise. I have also created artworks and symbols for government clients, which has been a highlight.
Biggest Change
When I worked in education, I didn’t have flexibility with my time. Now, with my business, I can work anytime and focus on my creativity. It feels wonderful to have that freedom and to see people connect with me through my art.
Future Goals
In the short term, I want more people to know about my art canvases and grow my audience. In the long term, I would love to have my art displayed in big galleries like GOMA in Brisbane. I want to be recognised as an artist and share my story.
Thank you Jessie for sharing your business journey with us. We wish you the best of luck with future endeavours and business success.
