Meet Shakira and Richard, the small business owners of R&S Lawn Mowing Services in Lockhart, QLD. They provide lawn and garden maintenance including small engine repairs and servicing lawn mowers. They have always been passionate about lawn mowing and yard maintenance, so starting this business is like a dream come true for them.

Shekira and Richard ‘s Business
We provide yard and garden maintenance services, including grass cutting for people in our community, and we also service lawn mowers and small engine repairs. We began operating in August of this year.
I, Shekira worked at local stores and at the airport, and my partner Richard is a certified mechanic for big vehicles and small engines. However, these were temporary jobs for both of us because our long-term dream was to start a grass cutting business.
We met our business coach, Jenny at a business workshop and since then there has been no going back as Jenny has been so helpful through our business journey. We could not have started our business without’s Jenny’s business coaching and support at all times.
We wanted to start our own lawn care services business because we both had an interest in gardening and we were confident that we could start and run this business in an efficient manner because we have the skills and passion needed to do this kind of work.

Did you get a loan from MR?
Yes, we are thankful to Jenny for helping us get a loan from Many Rivers. With the help of this loan, we were able to purchase a lawn mower to start catering to our clients.
Do you have any current employees?
Right now, it’s just Richard and me. We’re getting customers, and things are going well for us at the moment.
Biggest Challenge
Our main challenge has been securing contracts with the council, but we’re doing our best. But thanks to Jenny’s connections, we’re optimistic that we’ll land more council contracts in the upcoming months. Moreover, invoicing for the government has been a challenge as we are still understanding how to do invoices correctly.
Biggest Success
We’re starting to get customers, and more people are reaching out to us. In our community, it’s a bit challenging to get people interested in yard maintenance because there’s not much awareness about it. However, we’re working on educating people in our community, and thanks to Jenny’s contact, we also have opportunities to work with the local council. Moreover, positive feedback from our clients and word of mouth marketing is also a huge success factor for us.
Biggest Change
The biggest and most important change is that we are doing what we both love to do. We both had an interest and passion for grass-cutting and yard maintenance, so it is like our dream has finally come true.
Future Goals
We want to make our business bigger, hire more people, and offer services like fixing small engines and doing landscaping. We hope to serve more customers and provide more services to help them.
