Small Business Mentoring Toowoomba
October 2019
What is your business? Why did you want to go into business?
My Web Design and Drone business came together when I witnessed a promotional video in a council office. I loved the drone photography and because of all the travel I had done looking for a home and a place to work, I had a flash of inspiration to start my own drone business. As I had studied web technologies, I decided to combine the two!
How I came about the name of my business…well a computer has a menu and I was on a plane, heading to Melbourne. I was handed a menu to choose a snack and I had an epiphany, I thought that’s how I would like to format my web design business. Just as easy as choosing a meal off a food menu.
Who referred you to Many Rivers? When?
I had a meeting with Basil Dass for NEIS (New Enterprise Incentive Scheme) at the Toowoomba Konekt Employment Office. There I met Jamie McMillian (Toowoomba MEDM). He seemed a very reachable person from the start and it felt like I was in the right place. I was going to get the help I needed, for me that was financial help!
Why did you want to go into business?
There is so much to the web world, so much room for improvement, it seems that everyone knows so much but there is so much that people don’t know. As I love learning and my boys are all grown up, I have time on my hands to keep learning. So it’s a great business for me to be involved.
What services did you receive from Many Rivers? How did it help?
I have had a great relationship with Jamie, he’s like a big brother helping me sort out my stuff and giving me the confidence that I do indeed have a story to tell for my life! Jamie would ring and ask how things were going and call around and check that all was going well, throughout this whole year.
Did you get a loan from MR?
Yes. I made a decision that if I borrow money to finish off a few projects, this will ultimately be great for me as I would have to make regular payments to pay off a loan and finally receive a good credit rating.
What has been the biggest challenge to date?
My biggest challenge is combining all that I have learned with all the finer details of web design that I am still learning; and to believe in myself enough to keep on going even when the money has not come in yet. I sometimes feel that I have learned a trillion things to be a success but it is still not enough. This is a great challenge.
What has been the biggest success to date?
My biggest success is yet to come, as my website for Town Australia is still in the works. This is all my learnings put together. The NEIS was for this project.
What do you hope to achieve in the future?
I know the profession that I have chosen now will see me through the rest of my life, one day I will have a team working for me.
We want to encourage more and more people to take that first step towards building on their business ideas. We’re here to support you the whole way. Please take the Small Business Self Assessment and see if we are right for you.
